WHEREAS, on October 21, 2024, Sheila Cumberbatch, Member, made application to the
Southold Town Historic Preservation Commission for inclusion of the Shiloh Baptist Church at
43100 County Road 48, Southold,to the Town's"Registry of Historic Landmarks."
WHEREAS, the Commissioners visited the property, and on October24,2024,Tara Cubie,
Representative, appeared on behalf of the Shiloh Baptist Church,the Commissioners reviewed
the application, and found that the subject property meets the requirements for designation as set
forth in Chapter 170-5(A) of the Town Code of the Town of Southold.
NOW,THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,that the Southold Historic Preservation
{ Commission recommends that the Town Board of the Town of Southold designate the Shiloh
Baptist Church, located at 43100 County Road 48, Southold,particularly known as SCTM No.

Summary Statement:
Shiloh Baptist Church, located at 43100 County Road 48 in Southold, Suffolk County, New York, is significant
under Criterion A in the area of Ethnic Heritage/Black as the site of the first and oldest extant Black Baptist
church on Southold's East End and an important gathering space for the Black community of the North Fork
peninsula. The period of significance begins in 1921 with the establishment and construction of the church and
ends in 1974, the fifty-year mark, to reflect the property's ongoing use as a religious fellowship and community
space occupied by its original congregation.
Shiloh Baptist Church occupies a 1-acre parcel of land and is a modest one-story, wood frame building with a
rectangular plan, front gable asphalt shingle roof, and prominent square tower with a pyramidal hipped roof
centered in the fagade. The property is surrounded by mature woodland and is bound by North Road and
residential properties to the north, Hashamomuck Pond to the east, woodland and residential properties to the
south, and North Road to the west. Shiloh Baptist Church was established in Southold in 1921 to serve the
Black community of the North Fork. The church was founded under the guidance of Reverend Milton Sparks of
the Baptist House of Prayer in Harlem. Work on the church began ca. 1920 and was constructed by members
of the congregation, including Reverend E.A. Green and several deacons with the assistance of local

1 contractors.The founding members were Reverend and Mrs. Samuel White, Deacon and Mrs.Thomas
Morris, Deacon and Mrs. Cleveland Howard, Deacon and Mrs. Samuel Morris, Deacon and Mrs. Kemper
Parrish, Mr. and Mrs. William Taylor, and Mr. and Mrs. William Clark.The cornerstone for the building was laid
in January 1921.The church steeple was added at a later, undetermined, date.
Black history in Southold can be traced to its earliest European settlement. By 1686 there were 27 enslaved
persons in Southold held by 12 families. By the early-twentieth century, many came to work in migrant camps
and harvested local agricultural products. Some of these workers and their families settled in Southold and
established local businesses. Shiloh Baptist Church stands at the center of this community. For 102 years, the
church has served as a hub of spiritual and community life for Southold's Black residents.The church regularly
held chicken and fish fundraisers, which were popular with the entire community. Its annual Revivals, spiritual
events with preaching and singing, were open to local congregations of all denominations.
The only significant exterior change to Shiloh Baptist Church since its original construction is the later addition
of a steeple at an unknown date.The ceiling of the church was raised at an unspecified date. Other interior
changes are minor, including the addition of carpeting, a baptismal pool, and bathrooms.The property retains a
high degree of integrity and remains it its original location.The building still exhibits the characteristics of an
early-twentieth century church that served its Black Baptist congregation.
