The Board of Trustees reviewed your request to remove a mature oak tree within 100' of the wetlands on your property. The trees were reviewed and seen by Trustee Nick Krupski on October 3, 2026. The Board of Trustees determined that the tree may be removed at this time. No permit will be required in order to perform this work. Any other activity within 100' of the wetland boundary requires a permit from this office. This is not a determination from any other agency. If you have any questions, please call our office at (631) 765-1892. Upon visual assessment of the tree, its overall condition and structural characteristics raise concerns regarding its long-term stability and suitability for retention. The tree is a large, mature specimen with a substantial canopy and multiple large scaffold limbs originating within the main crown. Of particular concern is the primary union in the central portion of the tree, identified in the accompanying photograph. The size, configuration, and loading of the stems and scaffold limbs warrant concern regarding the potential for structural failure as the tree continues to mature and is subjected to wind, storms, snow, and other environmental loading. The tree also exhibits a relatively sparse and irregular crown, including areas of reduced foliage density and apparent branch decline. These symptoms may be associated with declining tree vitality and should be considered in conjunction with the tree's structural condition. Because this assessment is based in part upon visual characteristics, the presence or extent of internal decay cannot be conclusively determined from external appearance alone; however, the visible condition of the tree provides sufficient reason for concern regarding its continued retention. Due to the mature size of the oak, failure of a major stem, scaffold limb,or the tree itself could result in significant impact to the surrounding property and areas routinely occupied or used by people. The potential consequences associated with failure increase substantially with a tree of this size due to the considerable weight and force associated with large-diameter limbs and woody material. Based upon the tree's current condition and structural characteristics, removal is being requested as the preferred means of addressing these concerns, rather than relying upon extensive corrective pruning or continued management. While pruning may reduce portions of the canopy load,it would not necessarily correct underlying structural deficiencies or eliminate the potential for future failure. Accordingly,I respectfully request that the Town of Southold Board of Trustees approve the necessary permit for removal of this mature oak tree at 4150 Wunneweta Rd. Photographic documentation identifying the tree and the area of structural concern is being provided in support of this request. This request is being made based upon consideration of the tree's present condition and structure, as well as the potential consequences associated with the failure of a large limb, stem, or the tree itself. The intent of the proposed removal is to address these concerns proactively and responsibly. Please feel free to contact the property owner or applicant should the Board require additional information, photographs, documentation, or an on-site evaluation in connection with this permit application.
